Inspiration behind the Design
Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, LSD, was synthesized in 1938 by Albert Hofmann in the Sandoz laboratory located in Basel, Switzerland. Originally intended for clinical use, LSD looked extremely promising after testing. In the 1950s studies were being done showing promising results. Dr. Humphry Osmond gave LSD to AA members who failed to to quit drinking. One year later, 50% of that group had not had a drink.
Psychoanalyst Sidney Cohen experimented with LSD in the 50s. In his own words he described a trip he had” problems and strivings, the worries and frustrations of everyday life vanished; in their place was a majestic, sunlit, heavenly inner quietude.”
Dr. Timothy Leary, labeled “The most dangerous man in America” by President Nixon, popularized LSD in the US in the 1960s. He preached about the mind clearing benefits and connectivity with one self LSD produced. The phrase “Turn on, tune in, drop out” inspired the counterculture hippie movement with the youth. Fear that LSD will ruin society, President Nixon classified LSD as a schedule 1 drug halting research and legality of it.
